Weekend Session at Klaserie Caravan Park – by Ruan Erasmus.
Gearing up for my first Weekend Session at Klaserie Caravan Park was a most exciting prospect! The Klaserie venue is well known across the South African specimen fraternity…by Ruan Erasmus
Rumours of big mirror carp have always been around, right from the early days of specimen carp fishing in South Africa. I have fond memories paging through fishing magazines of yesteryear year dreaming of also one day catching one of those massive mirror carps!
Travelling from Fishing Pro Shop in Pretoria, we were blessed with some absolutely stunning views of nature! From fog hanging over the mountain tops, passing the Blyde river, to the abundant wildlife in the Lydenburg area. This is truly an African Adventure!
On our way to Klaserie, we stopped in Hoedspruit, about 30km from our final destination to stock up on some final groceries.
We arrived at Klaserie Caravan Park and quickly settled into the chalets for the weekend. It was time to get our game plan together for the next three nights.
My first priority was to my swim baited with DB Baits monster mix.
For my first hook bait, I rigged two plain DB Beats tiger nuts with a cork using the Korda cork 6mm drill. Carefully inserting a Korda 6mm cork stick.
My idea here was to pick the bait up from the bottom, as I knew there’s a lot of silt in the dam.
The second rod was baited up with DB Baits Pineapple tiger nut bottom bait. We carefully placed this bottom bait on a harder area to my left that we identified while feature finding. I added two hand fulls of freebie tiger nuts on top of this bait.
The third rod was baited up with a nice strong mint flavour tiger nut, with an Enterprise artificial maize in glow blue on top of the tiger nut for a perfect snowman presentation.
By the time our lines were in the water, it was almost dark and we enjoyed the African sunset over the dam.
What a privilege to share these moments with good friends Ben Dorfling and Hannes Wessels. We settled around a hardwood fire enjoying the wildlife that comes out at night, from bushbaby’s passing through the trees on top off us to lions roaring in the background! This is truly wild Africa!
Our first run came in the early hours of Saturday morning. We all jumped up to make sure we don’t miss any of the action for the first fish of our session. It was Bens turn and he landed a nice solid common carp of 9.6kg.
Photos were quickly taken followed by a successful release. Ben didn’t waste any time and rebaited his rod.
After that, it was Hannes Wessels’s when he managed to land a nice common carp…
On Saturday morning we decided to rebait our rods and get some more feed into the water. After baiting we settled in for a lovely lunch…
We were immediately interrupted with a screaming one toner on my right-hand rod that was baited with Db Baits Pineapple tiger nuts(corked).
The placement of this rod was about six meters out from my rod stand on the first drop off that I could find in about 1.5 meters of water.
After all the excitement I finally landed my first fish, a nice mirror carp of 12.6kg!
Ten minutes later my 2nd rod when screaming off. This time on the new Minty ice flavour tiger nut topped with the enterprise glow blue artificial maize. This bait produced a nice 15.5kg common carp for me, after having two fish straight after each other my weekend was made!
Saturday night went without any fish, on Sunday morning Hannes landed a nice Klaserie mirror of 13.3kg.
Later that afternoon Ben Managed a nice Klaserie mirror carp of just under the 12kg mark.
The following morning we had to pack up again and head back to our reality (work). This is a trip never to be forgotten, an amazing venue, and a big thanks to Loukie from Klaserie Caravan park, always making sure his guests comes first and that everything is clean and taken care of.
