Shimano Tiagra 80 WA
The Shimano Tiagra 80 WA is the biggest Tiagra that we keep in stock, but would be more than happy to assist with the big Tiagra 130…
If big marlin off Africa’s East Coast is your game then the Shimano Tiagra 80 WA is the tool that you need. With an extremely well-sealed drag you can be assured that no matter how ruff that surf launch was that your drag system is dry and good to go…
According to Shimano website the Shimano Tiagra 80 WA reels feature an innovative hydrothermal drag system that virtually eliminates the drag setting variances. I can confirm this after years of setting drags on multiple different brands of top-spec big game reels. Nothing holds its drag like a Shimano Tiagra!
The Shimano Tiagra 80 WA holds a lot of line. We suggest either spooling with 80lb class mono, depending on the brand you will get between 800-1000 meters on with space for a 400lb wind-on or if you are lucky enough to fish real often we can spool with 500 meters of dacron and splice in 300-500 meters of top-shot on top. This will make frequent line changes cheaper over time.
We suggest 80lb class line for the Shimano Tiagra 80 WA with a “strike” setting at about 12kg, this will put you at about 16-18kg on full drag or as we prefer to call it… Sunset!!! So you are still only at about half of the line breaking strain and if you consider that a grey-hounding marlin still adds a lot of pressure on the line then you should be real safe as far as line breaks go…
The best part of our East Coast Marlin is the amount of marlin species and different sizes that can be encountered on any day… Small Black or Striped marlin from 50lb all the way to giant Blue or Black Marlin well north of 1000lb!!!
The Shimano Tiagra 80 WA will have you in with a fair shot no matter what jumps on the end of the line!!!!
Unfortunately, marlin often sound, and from time to time die deep under the boat. The Shimano Tiagra 80 WA comes with a two-speed gear that does make it a fair bit easier to lift these fish from the depths.
However, in the age of braided lines one can easily fit 600 meters of 50lb backing and another 200 meters of 50lb class mono on top of that. Combine that with a 35lb drag and it becomes the ideal expedition reel that will keep you in the game for everything from catching live bonnies to landing that “accidental” 200lb yellowfin!!!

Why is this important you may ask?
When you hook the fish of a lifetime, like one ends up doing when on expedition trips to places like St Lazarus banks it is great to know exactly where you are drag wise to ensure that you can never ever break your line.
We suggest fishing the Shimano Tiagra 30 WLRSA with 50lb class line on these trips with a “strike” setting at about 7kg, this will put you at about 10-12kg on full drag or as we prefer to call it… Sunset!!! So you are still only at about half of the line breaking strain and if you consider that an angry wahoo or grey-hounding marlin still adds a lot of pressure on the line then you should be real safe as far as line breaks go…
When that big yellowfin tuna settles 100 meters below the boat with those steady recharging circles simply engage the conveniently located two-speed button to really crank down on the fish this will get her next to the boat in no time and safe you a lot of sweating!
Sure the Shimano Tiagra 80 WA is not cheap, but should be considered a investment for life time…
