Sufix 131 G-Core
Sufix 131 G-Core must be the greatest improvement in mass-produced braid over the last 15 years!
It is available in 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 65, 80 and 100lb classes.
All of us here at Fishing Pro Shop has been fishing with various braids for over 20 years and we all started off fishing four and then six and then eight carrier braids… Let’s break that down into fishing talk.
The amount of carrier strands tells you many strands are in the line. So a four carrier will have four strands, a six carrier six strands and so on and if you follow the marketing aspect you would believe that more is better for the following reasons.
- If you loose one strand on a four carrier that is 25 percent where as on a eight carrier it is only 12.5%.
- The more strands you get the rounder the braid becomes. This helps to cast better and and packs better on the reel.
So, now we are talking a 13 carrier with the Sufix 131 and if you break it down on the science side from Suix it says the following:
“Sufix 131 G-Core is the most reliable superline during casting, strikes and fighting action! It is built with 13 fibers (12 HMPE fibers + 1 GORE® Performance Fiber in core). A single strand of GORE® Performance Fiber is surrounded by 12 precision braided HMPE fibers. The construction has no weak points which leads to strength consistency.
The GORE® Performance Fiber is the most abrasion resistant textile fiber. It is solid and round like a monofilament but has the same low stretch as the PE fibers. No more problems with gliding or knots opening! In addition, the 13-carrier construction increases the number of fibers at the knot resulting in better knot tying and stronger holding power.
The structure of the Sufix 131 G-Core is much rounder than any other competitor’s 12 or 16 carrier braid. The rounder line reduces the resistance in water (while retrieving) and the abrasion caused by rod guides and obstacles in the water. The core fiber (GORE® Performance Fiber) prevents the line from internal fraying making the line more durable.
A rounder line casts further, more silent and more accurate. The cancelled center hole does not allow water to enter – no water means lighter line and longer casting distances.
The Sufix 131 G-Core is braided line that is great for casting and jigging, when you need a relatively thin line. We recommend Sufix 131 G-Core for example for light-tackle salt water fishing.”
Not being one to read to much into marketing bits I decided to go and test it…
So far I have taken it to Nicaragua for Tarpon where after more than 3000 casts with the 40lb I am yet to encounter a wind knot, managed to release a beautiful Tarpon that the Guides estimated at 80lb after a very hard 40 minute fight with the Shimano Stella 6000 XG so I can confirm the castability and strength of Sufix 131.
The year before that I used the 30lb off Cape Vidal for a weeks fishing casting small spoons to Tuna and Bonito and managed Yellowfin Tuna, Bonito, Skip Jack, Cuda(King Mackeral) and big shark that decided to tax a cuda!!! I did my best to break the Sufix 131 30lb with the trusted Shimano Stella 6000 XG, but with no joy… Eventually the 40lb leader gave in!
My latest spool of Sufix 131 is the 10lb that I am now using for shore jigging on a little Shimano Stella 3000 and have I been impressed! Hundreds, maybe thousands of casts with no wind knots! Managed my most pleasing fish this year with it at 9-Mile reef Sodwana Bay in March. A GT that must have been about five odd kilograms, not very big I know. But after 35 minutes on ultra light tackle and the 10lb Sufix 131 jumping from rock to rock in very strong wind a most rewarding catch!!!!
So, is the Sufix 131 perfect? I don’t know??? Is it the best casting braid that I have ever used? ABSOLUTELY!!!
Do I believe that at some point I will get a wind knot? Sure… But so far Sufix 131 has been so good to me.
Give it a go!!!!
